The Laughterhouse cover

From the author of the international best-selling thrillers The Cleaner, The Killing Hour, Cemetery Lake, Blood Men and Collecting Cooper.

A gripping new thriller from crime writing sensation Paul Cleave.

Theodore Tate never forgot his first crime scene – ten-year-old Jessica found dead in the ‘Laughterhouse’, an old abandoned slaughterhouse with the ‘S’ spray-painted over. The killer was found and arrested. Justice was served. Or was it?

Fifteen years later, there’s a new killer on the loose and he has a list of people who were involved in Jessica’s murder case, among them Doctor Stanton, a man with three young daughters.

If Tate is going to help them, he has to find the connection between the killer, the ‘Laughterhouse’ and a growing list of murder victims. And he needs to figure it out fast, because Stanton and his daughters have been kidnapped, and Stanton is being forced to make an impossible decision: which one of his daughters is to die first.

Book Review: The New Zealand Woman by Bee Dawson

The New Zealand Woman coverThe New Zealand Woman: 80 Glorious Years of Fashion, Food and Friendship From the Pages of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly by Bee Dawson, Whitcoulls, RRP $24.99, ISBN 9781877327513, Available now.

The New Zealand Woman’s Weekly. It’s an institution and now it’s 80 years old. Yes, 80! I didn’t realise it had been around that long but it has, first gracing news-stands in 1932. With all those years of free patterns, up to the minute advice and endless photos of Rachel Hunter, there aren’t many NZers around who haven’t read a copy (or two).

The New Zealand Woman is a well produced, wonderfully illustrated celebration of the past 80 years of the EnZedDubDub (or NZWW if you insist), that pulls together articles, photography, illustrations and advertising to produce quite a repository of New Zealand history in the 20th century.

From recipes for pork brawn to handy hints on dusting with kerosene to cigarette advertising (“It’s the tobacco that counts!”), The New Zealand Woman also provides an interesting study on the rise of celebratory culture and the change to “women’s magazines” over the last half century, from inspirational (about “our” lives) to aspirational (about “their lives”).

A fun social history of a Kiwi institution.

I’ve got several copies of The New Zealand Woman to give away! Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for how to win – starting with this week’s competition on Facebook

Win a Jane Eyre DVD thanks to Universal Home Pictures!

Jane Eyre DVD coverIn the 19th Century-set story, Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) suddenly flees Thornfield Hall, the vast and isolated estate where she works as a governess for Adèle Varens, a child under the custody of Thornfield’s brooding master, Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender).

The imposing residence – and Rochester’s own imposing nature – have sorely tested her resilience. With nowhere else to go, she is extended a helping hand by clergyman St. John Rivers (Jamie Bell) and his family. As she recuperates in the Rivers’ Moor House and looks back upon the tumultuous events that led to her escape, Jane wonders if the past is ever truly past…

Exclusive ‘Down-Under’ create a character competition from Derek Landy!

While writing Mortal Coil, bestselling children’s author, Derek Landy gave his readers around the world the chance to put their powers of imagination to the test and create a character to be written into the book. Of the entries, Derek said ‘it’s been STAGGERING. It’s been MIND-BLOWING. The quality has been immense, the imagination has been startling, and the talent has been undeniable.’

After a great deal of deliberation a winner was chosen and the character of Geoffrey Scrutinous was included in his last new book, Mortal Coil!

Derek is giving his New Zealand and Australian readers another chance to put their imaginations to the test…

Exclusive ‘Down-Under’ create a character competition from Derek Landy!

Derek Landy will be touring New Zealand to promote his exciting new book, Skulduggery Pleasant: The End of the World, in August 2012!

About the author: Derek Landy lives in Dublin, where he complains about having to write a blog ( He is far too modest to talk about the numerous awards he has won, such as The Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House award in the UK, or any of the others that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He finds that sort of thing gauche.
